In the summer of 2024, a devoted family man's life was tragically cut short in a seemingly random act of violence in West Baltimore. Thirty-three-year-old Devin Butler, a husband and father of four with a fifth child on the way, was fatally stabbed on the evening of July 5th. Known by his loved ones as a humble, quiet, and low-key individual, Butler worked for a mortuary transporting service, a job he took pride in, ensuring the respectful care of the deceased.
On that fateful night, Butler and a coworker were in a company van on West Lafayette Avenue after having stopped at a convenience store. As they drove away, a man who had been at the same store jumped in front of their vehicle and threw something at it. Butler, concerned about potential damage to the van, pulled over to inspect it. Without any apparent provocation, altercation, or even an exchange of words, the man rushed at Butler and stabbed him multiple times in the upper body. Devin Butler was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the senseless attack, the Baltimore Police Department released a photo of a person of interest, seeking the public's help in identifying the man they believed had information crucial to solving the case. The investigation, aided by surveillance video and DNA evidence, quickly led to a suspect. On July 19, 2024, police arrested 29-year-old Tyrone Blackwell at his home in West Baltimore. Investigators reported finding a bloody jacket belonging to the suspect in a nearby alley and other clothing from the night of the incident in his residence.
Tyrone Blackwell has been charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as assault. During a court appearance, Blackwell was denied bail, with the judge deeming him a threat and a danger to the public. It was revealed that at the time of the incident, Blackwell was on probation for a 2015 robbery and firearm conviction in Pennsylvania. His mother stated that he has a history of mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and had been seeking psychiatric help just days before the fatal stabbing. In court, Blackwell claimed to have no memory of the events.
