In the early moments of May 14, 2020, gunshots shattered the midnight quiet in the 100 block of Violet Hill Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, leaving 26-year-old Ronald Lewis, a Black male, fatally wounded. Responding officers found Lewis on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, he succumbed to his injuries. Lewis, a resident of the 3600 block of W.
Belvedere Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.
The investigation into the death of Ronald Lewis led detectives to identify 23-year-old Clifford Knight as a suspect. After gathering witness statements and physical evidence, an arrest warrant was issued for Knight on July 26, 2020. On August 5, police located and arrested Knight in the 2600 block of Roberts Place. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Knight and Lewis had communicated via text message to arrange a meeting on the night of the murder. Witnesses reported seeing Lewis arrive in a silver Acura and approach someone in a black Nissan Altima before he was shot multiple times as the Nissan fled the scene. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting the motive for the killing was revenge over a drug deal gone wrong, stating that Knight intended to retaliate against Lewis for allegedly selling him bad drugs. In August 2021, a jury found Clifford Knight guilty of first-degree murder and related firearm offenses. Subsequently, a judge sentenced Knight to life in prison, suspending all but 50 years. The mother of Lewis's son provided a victim impact statement, expressing the profound loss her son and she have experienced and lamenting that Lewis never had the chance to become a better man for his child.
