Pastor Gregory Boyd, a 54-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on September 10, 2020, in Miami, Florida. Boyd, who was the leader of New Birth Harvest Outreach Ministries Churches of Deliverance, was shot while getting a bite to eat at a local flea market. The incident occurred around 6:05 p.m. in front of the Shoe Time store located on Northwest 27th Avenue.
Boyd was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
The shooting stemmed from an argument between a woman and a group of men, which escalated when a second group of men got involved. Boyd was caught in the crossfire as several subjects opened fire in a crowded parking lot. The Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide Bureau, investigated the case and, with the assistance of the community, were able to locate and arrest two individuals involved in the murder. Nathaniel Bernard Roberson, a 31-year-old African American male, and Latravia Charm Bell, a 20-year-old African American female, were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other related charges. A third suspect, Mikal Tavares-Norman, a 20-year-old African American male, was also arrested and charged accordingly.
The community and Boyd's family were devastated by his death. Boyd's daughter, Sharita Cooper, expressed her grief on social media, describing her father as a great man of God, a hero, and a beloved husband and friend. The church and community held vigils in his honor, calling for justice and an end to senseless violence. The Miami-Dade Police Department and the prosecutors of the Gun Violence Initiative were commended for their commitment and hard work in solving the case and providing closure to the Boyd family.
