VonTavius Sands, aged 36, tragically lost his life on September 10, 2016, in Miami, Florida. Sands, along with Edward Seymour, was fatally shot during an armed robbery outside the M&M Too Sweet nightclub in the Goulds neighborhood of South Miami-Dade County. The incident occurred as Sands and Seymour were standing next to Seymour's silver Cadillac CTS. A man approached them, opened fire, and subsequently stole the vehicle, driving away southbound.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The investigation into the murders of Sands and Seymour revealed that the assailant targeted them for the gold chains they were wearing. For over two years, Miami-Dade police detectives worked tirelessly to identify and apprehend the suspect. Their efforts paid off when they were able to track down Miquell Simmons, who was charged with the murders in January 2019. Simmons, 28 at the time of his arrest, faced multiple charges including two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, and one count of armed carjacking. Detectives were able to link Simmons to the crime through fingerprints found on a car window at the scene.
The case against Simmons brought some measure of closure to the families of Sands and Seymour, who had been seeking justice for their loved ones.
