Gerald Williams, a hardworking father of three known for his quiet and humble nature, was killed in a shocking daylight shootout on what should have been a day of celebration—his 36th birthday. His death on September 28, 2026, came a day after he was wounded in a gun battle in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood, an incident that has left his family devastated.

His brother, Michael Veras, described him as a man his family and friends called "Rat." In the aftermath, Veras organized a GoFundMe to help cover funeral and burial expenses. “My brother is a hard working man, now his family is torn apart," his brother told a reporter. "Everybody on social media loved my brother, my brother was quiet, humble.” A former mentor from a youth development program recalled Williams as a quiet and intentional young man who was determined to succeed, someone who would sit and read while others around him were disruptive. That mentor remembered his pride in the man Williams became, stating, "He should be raising his sons. He should be working, laughing with his brothers, taking care of his family."

The violence erupted just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, near Northwest 15th Avenue and 68th Street. Family members stated the conflict began with an argument inside a local store between Williams's father and another man, 33-year-old Micah Tilley. When Williams arrived at the scene, the dispute spilled into the street and escalated into a gunfight. The Miami Police Department was alerted to the shooting by a ShotSpotter notification.

Surveillance video captured the chaotic exchange. According to an arrest report, the footage shows Tilley firing a handgun at Williams. As innocent bystanders ran for cover, Tilley took a position behind a white Subaru SUV and continued shooting. At one point, he opened the door of the Subaru, retrieved a rifle, and kept firing as Williams ran down a side street. Tilley then allegedly chased after him on foot, continuing to shoot with the rifle.

When police arrived, they found multiple spent casings on the ground and two vehicles, including the Subaru, riddled with bullets. Williams was discovered nearby with a gunshot wound to his leg; a Glock handgun was found near him. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries the next day.

Minutes after the shootout, Micah Tilley approached an officer at the scene. According to the police report, he spontaneously said, "I did it…the shooting, I was defending myself." Tilley, who is from Opa-locka, was taken into custody. He reportedly told detectives that he saw Williams get out of a car with a firearm, which prompted him to open fire, and he admitted to using both a handgun and a rifle.

Tilley was arrested by the Miami Police Department and charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a public place. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As of late 2026, the public record does not indicate if the charges were upgraded to murder following Gerald Williams's death or what the current status of the legal proceedings is.
