Ebony Nicholas, a 22-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on September 29, 2020, in Jacksonville, Florida. The incident occurred at the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Pecan Park Road, where both she and her boyfriend, Daisean Biffle, were employed. On the evening of the incident, Ebony Nicholas had arrived at work around 6:30 p.m. Biffle, who was not scheduled to work that night, arrived at the facility around 7 p.m. using his employee badge to gain entry.
The couple, who shared two children, had a domestic dispute earlier that day. Inside the facility, Biffle confronted Nicholas, and after a brief argument, he shot her multiple times before turning the gun on himself in an attempted murder-suicide.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced Ebony Nicholas deceased at the scene. Biffle, who survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office recovered the handgun used in the shooting and found two additional loaded magazines on Biffle. The case was thoroughly investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, and Biffle was later charged with second-degree murder while he was still hospitalized.
In February 2024, Daisean Biffle was found guilty of first-degree murder by a Duval County jury. The trial, which included surveillance footage from the Amazon facility, showed the moments leading up to and following the shooting. Biffle's defense argued that the shooting was a crime of passion rather than premeditated murder, but the jury deliberated for just 20 minutes before delivering a guilty verdict. Biffle was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
