In the quiet town of Camden, South Carolina, the life of a young man, Travis Zidel Jiles, a 22-year-old Black male, was abruptly cut short on the evening of Sunday, September 27, 2020. Around 7:41 p.m., officers were called to the 2200 block of Carlos Street, where they found Jiles lying in the street. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kershaw County Coroner.
Travis, a 2016 graduate of Camden High School, was remembered
by loved ones as a devoted son, brother, and friend with a passion for music and sports. He had been a member of the junior beta club and, as a HOPE scholar, had gone on to study computer science at Coastal Carolina University. His death sent ripples of grief and shock through his community.
The investigation into the shooting led the Camden Police Department to a suspect, Lonnell Damon Duckett, Jr. Duckett was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Travis Jiles. Authorities indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that further charges against Duckett or others could be forthcoming as they continued to piece together the events of that tragic evening. The community was urged to come forward with any information that could aid in bringing closure to the case and delivering justice for Travis and his grieving family.
