In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 22, 2014, the life of 25-year-old Antwan Mario Dixon, a male from Camden, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. Emergency services in Kershaw County received a call around 5:30 a.m. reporting a car crash and the sound of gunshots near the intersection of Black River Road and Pathfinder Trailer. When deputies arrived, they discovered a 1999 Ford Taurus in a ditch, engulfed in flames.
Inside the burning vehicle, slumped in the driver's seat, was Antwan Dixon.
A responding deputy acted quickly, pulling Dixon from the fiery wreck just moments before it was fully consumed. Dixon was airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia for treatment. It was there that medical staff made a startling discovery; Dixon had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Approximately 12 hours after being pulled from the car, Antwan Mario Dixon succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into Dixon's death quickly became a homicide case. Investigators found multiple bullet holes in his vehicle and recovered numerous spent shell casings from the roadway, confirming that he had been shot before the crash and fire. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office began interviewing potential witnesses and anyone who had been with Dixon prior to the incident in an effort to piece together the events that led to his death.
A few days later, authorities announced they were seeking a person of interest for questioning. They identified 22-year-old Robert Wendell Simon as someone who might have information crucial to the investigation. On April 1, 2014, following the advice of his attorney, Robert Wendell Simon turned himself into the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Antwan Mario Dixon. Simon was then transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
