Roderick Juan "RJ" Davis, a 19-year-old from Lompoc, California, tragically lost his life on October 7, 2006. Davis was shot to death at a Chevron gas station on East Ocean Avenue in Lompoc. The incident occurred after an altercation between Davis and Martin Lara Jr., a 22-year-old from Lompoc. The two had a history of rivalry dating back to their high school days at Cabrillo High School, where they were both student-athletes.
On the evening of the shooting, Davis arrived at the gas station with two friends, while Lara was accompanied by a young boy. An argument ensued, leading to Lara shooting Davis in the neck. Davis succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting.
Following the incident, Martin Lara Jr. fled the scene and managed to evade capture for a little over two weeks. He eventually turned himself in at a border crossing in El Paso, Texas. Lara was charged with suspicion of murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle at a person, and being a vehicle occupant with a concealed weapon. During his arraignment, it was determined that Lara would not face the death penalty, as no special circumstances applied to his case. Instead, he faced a sentence of 35 years to life with the possibility of parole.
The legal proceedings saw various developments, including the involvement of Angela Barrera, Lara's ex-girlfriend, who was accused of aiding in his escape. Barrera was sentenced to one year in jail and five years of probation after pleading no contest to helping Lara evade police. In January 2008, Martin Lara Jr. was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after agreeing to a plea deal. He pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and admitted to a special allegation of shooting a firearm from a motor vehicle. This plea deal reduced his potential sentence from 35 years to life to 20 years to life, with the possibility of parole after serving 20 years.
