Kenneth "Kenny" Sosa, aged 27, was tragically killed on November 27, 2006, in Lompoc, California. Sosa was shot multiple times while sitting in his car on North N Street, just a block south of Lompoc High School. The shooting occurred in broad daylight, around 2 p.m., and was not a random act. Sosa was specifically targeted, although the exact motive behind the killing was not immediately clear. At the time of his death, Sosa had a history of run-ins with law enforcement, including a conviction for receiving stolen property and a charge of resisting arrest. He had also been arrested earlier in 2006 on suspicion of threatening to kill a man in Lompoc.
The investigation into Sosa's murder led to the arrest of four individuals in February 2008. Joe Rodriguez Gastelum Jr., 34, and Kristopher Michael Blehm, 23, were charged with homicide as the principal perpetrators of the shooting. Additionally, Scott Allen Kuster, 36, and Christina Rodriguez Gastelum, 35, were charged with being accessories to homicide after the fact. The arrests were the result of a 14-month investigation by the Lompoc Police Department, which gathered sufficient evidence to issue arrest and search warrants.
During the trial, it was revealed that Joe Rodriguez Gastelum Jr. was the gunman who shot Sosa, while Kristopher Michael Blehm provided the firearm and was present in the car during the crime. The motive for the murder was linked to a personal dispute involving Joe Gastelum's wife, Lisa Gastelum, who had been in a relationship with Sosa while Joe was incarcerated. On the night of the shooting, Lisa Gastelum followed Sosa in her car, with Joe Gastelum driving behind her. Joe Gastelum then pulled up beside Sosa's car and opened fire, killing him.
The trial saw emotional testimonies from Lisa Gastelum and her 12-year-old son, who both witnessed the shooting. Despite initially not identifying Joe Gastelum as the shooter, they later testified against him in court. The trial concluded with Joe Rodriguez Gastelum Jr. and Kristopher Michael Blehm being convicted of murder in July 2009. Both men received lengthy prison sentences for their roles in the crime. The case highlighted the complexities of personal relationships and the tragic consequences of unresolved conflicts.
