On April 30, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., Lompoc Police responded to a reported domestic violence incident in the 1600 block of West Pine Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds: 59-year-old Cassandra Butler, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and 29-year-old Tyree Eugene Sims-McPherson, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical intervention, McPherson succumbed to his injuries on May 2, 2023.
Born on May 17, 1993, in Lompoc, California, he was the son of Cornelius McPherson and Latoya Sims but was raised by his aunt, affectionately known as "Auntie Mom" Cece. His passing was deeply mourned by his family and the local community.
The Lompoc Police Department swiftly identified and apprehended the suspect, 60-year-old Zavian Chappell, on April 30, 2023. Following McPherson's death, Chappell was charged with a second count of homicide, adding to the initial charge related to Butler's death. The case was classified as a double homicide, and authorities continued their investigation, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
The tragic deaths of Butler and McPherson underscored the pervasive issue of gun violence and its devastating impact on families and communities.
