Robert Anthony Proano, a 22-year-old resident of Long Beach, California, was tragically shot and killed on February 10, 2014. The incident occurred near the intersection of East Artesia Boulevard and Myrtle Avenue. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Long Beach police responded to a call of shots fired at approximately 1:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Proano lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m.
The investigation into Proano's death revealed that the motive behind the shooting was believed to be gang-related. On March 12, 2014, Long Beach detectives arrested 24-year-old Joseph Avila, also known as Joe Avila, at his residence in Long Beach. Avila was charged with murder and weapons violations, along with gang enhancements. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed these charges on March 14, 2014. Avila was held at the Long Beach Jail with bail set at $1,040,000.
The legal proceedings culminated in Avila being sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison. This sentence was handed down following his plea, which acknowledged his role in the murder of Robert Proano. The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gang violence in the area and the efforts of law enforcement to address such crimes. The Long Beach Police Department urged anyone with additional information about the case to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in solving and preventing violent crimes.
