On April 14, 2024, at approximately 8:45 p.m., 30-year-old Long Beach resident Nelson Alexis Martinez Gonzalez was fatally shot in the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue. Responding officers found Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to his upper body; despite immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Long Beach Police Department's preliminary investigation revealed that an unidentified male suspect approached Gonzalez on foot, engaged with
him, and then shot him before fleeing the scene. Detectives believe there was an interaction between Gonzalez and the suspect prior to the shooting, though the exact motive remains under investigation.
Shortly after the incident, officers identified a vehicle potentially linked to the crime. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver led them on a pursuit, eventually abandoning the vehicle near the 1700 block of Pacific Coast Highway and fleeing on foot. A perimeter was established, and the SWAT team was deployed. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Long Beach resident Ahmed Mahmoud, was apprehended and initially arrested on an unrelated no-bail warrant.
Following further investigation, Mahmoud was charged with Gonzalez's murder. He faces multiple charges, including one count of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of ammunition, and evading arrest. His bail was set at $3.1 million. The case has been presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
