Carlos Ernesto Nunez, a 27-year-old resident of Concord, California, tragically lost his life on February 10, 2019. The incident occurred near Clayton Road and Detroit Avenue in Concord, where Nunez was fatally shot while riding a bicycle. The motive behind the murder was linked to a dispute over the bicycle, which was believed to have been stolen.
Jose “Flacco” Hernandez-Barajas, 24, and Luis Angel Mendoza, 22, were identified as the primary suspects in the case.
According to police reports, Hernandez-Barajas believed that the bicycle Nunez was riding belonged to his uncle. On the night of the incident, surveillance footage captured a man running up to Nunez and shooting him multiple times. The autopsy revealed that Nunez had sustained six gunshot wounds to the head, with at least two shots fired at close range. This brutal act of violence was witnessed by Mendoza, who later confessed to police that Hernandez-Barajas had confronted Nunez about the bicycle and, after a brief exchange, retrieved a gun and shot him.
The investigation into Nunez's murder was aided by a confidential informant who revealed that one of the shooters had been contacted by police during a marijuana arrest four months prior to the homicide. This information led investigators to Hernandez-Barajas and Mendoza, who were subsequently charged with second-degree murder and robbery. Both men pleaded no contest to the charges and accepted life sentences with the possibility of parole after serving 15 years.
The case highlighted the senseless nature of the crime, as it stemmed from a dispute over a stolen bicycle. The prosecution's case was bolstered by surveillance footage and witness testimonies, including that of Mendoza's girlfriend, who reported that Mendoza had come home shortly after the murder, visibly shaken and vomiting. The plea deals were finalized in March 2022, bringing some closure to the tragic event that claimed the life of Carlos Ernesto Nunez.
