Alba Valladares, known affectionately as the "Candy Lady," was killed in her home in Algiers, New Orleans, on October 2, 2011. Valladares, who was 72 years old, was cherished by her community for selling candy to neighborhood children and her kindness towards others. Originally from Honduras, she moved to the United States in pursuit of a better life and worked hard to support her family. The community mourned her deeply, holding vigils to honor her memory.
