Darrelle Scales, a 44-year-old resident of Contra Costa County, was fatally shot on August 19, 2020, in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. The incident occurred in the 800 block of O'Farrell Street, where officers found Scales on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by officers and medical personnel, Scales was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of Robert Brewer, a 31-year-old man who was charged with
murder in connection with the shooting. Brewer's defense attorney argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense. According to the defense, Brewer had rented a car and was visiting San Francisco for shopping. He got lost and mistakenly approached a vehicle he thought was his rental car, which actually belonged to Scales. This misunderstanding led to a confrontation where Scales allegedly threatened Brewer. Brewer attempted to walk away, but Scales followed him for more than two blocks. Fearing for his safety when he saw Scales reach for what appeared to be a shiny object in his waistband, Brewer drew his own gun and shot Scales. It was later revealed that Scales had an 18-inch metal pipe in his possession.
During the trial, Brewer's attorney emphasized that Brewer, who had grown up in a violent environment, carried a gun solely for protection. The jury ultimately acquitted Brewer, accepting the argument that he acted in self-defense. The case highlighted the complexities of self-defense claims and the impact of personal histories on such incidents. Scales' family described him as a positive and uplifting individual, and his death was mourned as a senseless tragedy.
