Gerson Romero, a 19-year-old from San Francisco, tragically lost his life on August 11, 2018, in a gang-related shooting. The incident occurred in the Excelsior neighborhood of San Francisco, where Romero and several friends were targeted by members of the 19th Street/16th Street Sureños, a local street gang. The gang members, including Jose Aguilar and Jonathan Escobar, were seeking retaliation for an earlier drive-by shooting.
Upon spotting Romero and his friends, Aguilar and Escobar opened fire, continuing to shoot even after Romero fell to the ground. Three others were injured in the attack.
The investigation into Romero's murder led to significant legal actions. Both Aguilar and Escobar were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. A federal grand jury indicted them in April 2021, and they have remained in custody since their arrests. Aguilar, also known as "Slim," pleaded guilty to his role in the murder on May 3, 2023, admitting his affiliation with the Lower Mission District Sureños. He acknowledged that the gang operated as a racketeering enterprise, committing various crimes to maintain control over their territory. Aguilar was sentenced to 22 years in prison by United States District Judge Vince Chhabria.
Escobar, Aguilar's co-defendant, also pleaded guilty to his involvement in the shooting. On June 28, 2023, he was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Both men admitted that the fatal shooting of Romero was a retaliatory act against rival gang members. The sentencing of Aguilar and Escobar was part of a broader effort by law enforcement to combat gang violence in San Francisco. U.S. Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey emphasized that the severe sentences were intended to send a message to criminal enterprises that gang violence would not be tolerated and would be met with impactful legal consequences.
The case against Aguilar and Escobar highlighted the ongoing gang rivalry in San Francisco's Mission District, where the Sureños and their rivals, the Norteños, frequently clashed. This rivalry has resulted in numerous homicides and other violent crimes over the years.
