On the evening of October 18, 1988, a 26-year-old New York City Police Officer named Christopher Hoban, a man of Caucasian descent, lost his life in the line of duty. Working as an undercover narcotics officer in Manhattan, Hoban and his partner entered an apartment on West 105th Street to conduct a drug buy. The operation took a fatal turn when the three men inside the apartment grew suspicious of the two officers.
A tense confrontation escalated when the suspects decided to search
Hoban's partner and discovered his service weapon. Reacting swiftly to the grave danger, Officer Hoban drew his own firearm. In the close quarters of the apartment, a violent shootout erupted. During the exchange of gunfire, both Officer Hoban and one of the suspects were struck and fatally wounded. Despite being rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, Christopher Hoban succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement moved quickly to bring the remaining suspects to justice. One of the surviving perpetrators was apprehended by officers who had been stationed outside the building during the undercover operation. The third suspect managed to flee the scene, sparking a manhunt that concluded with his arrest by the FBI in San Juan, Puerto Rico, nine days after the shooting.
The two surviving suspects faced the legal consequences of their actions. Both were ultimately convicted for their roles in the murder of Officer Hoban. One of the men, Bienvenido Castillo, who was 25 at the time of sentencing in 1990, received a term of 57 years and two months to life in prison. The other accomplice was also convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, ensuring that both men would be held accountable for the death of the young officer.
