On Thursday, November 21, 1991, 18-year-old Cleveland Boyce was shot and killed. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to two other teenagers, stemmed from a dispute that had reportedly been simmering for a week.
The conflict is said to have originated from a contentious staredown a week prior, a seemingly minor
slight that escalated with tragic consequences. The dispute festered until that Thursday evening when it erupted in gunfire. The scene of the fatal encounter was the lobby of a building at 850 Father Capodanno Boulevard, a location that would become a marker of a life lost too soon. It was there that Cleveland Boyce was fatally wounded, and two of his companions, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, were also struck by bullets.
Following the shooting, the New York City Police Department quickly identified a suspect. Phillippe Beliard, a 17-year-old from the Port Richmond area of Staten Island, was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. The charges brought against Beliard were serious, including murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The swift arrest brought a suspect into custody, beginning the process of seeking justice for Cleveland Boyce and the two other victims wounded in the attack. The two injured teenagers were transported to St. Vincent's Hospital for treatment of their gunshot wounds.
