Barry Moultrie was a 35-year-old man from Staten Island who was killed on July 22, 2020, after gunfire erupted at the corner of Barker Street and Castleton Avenue. Police responding to the scene found him with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where he did not survive.
In the weeks that followed, the killing hung over the neighborhood like a question that wouldn’t settle.
Detectives focused on a Staten Island man, Anthony McCorkle, and by late summer authorities said the suspect had been tracked down in Pennsylvania. McCorkle was brought back to New York to face charges that included murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
The case then moved from street-corner shock to courthouse procedure. Under Indictment No. 139/20, McCorkle ultimately entered a guilty plea, and the court imposed sentence on January 9, 2023. When McCorkle later challenged the punishment as excessive, the Appellate Division noted that he had waived his right to appeal and affirmed the sentence.
