On a summer evening in Brooklyn, New York, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short. Arturo M. Meyers, a 42-year-old male corrections officer, was fatally shot on June 17, 1993. A veteran of the New York City Department of Correction for 19 years, he was just six months away from eligibility for his 20-year retirement.
The incident occurred at the corner of Georgia and Sutter Avenues when Meyers, who was off-duty at the time, intervened in a dispute between a man and a
woman. In a selfless act to de-escalate the situation, he was shot four times. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, a suspect was apprehended by law enforcement. Meyers, a resident of southwest Queens, was assigned to the Brooklyn Criminal Courts. His sudden and violent death left behind his wife, Arlene, and their two children, a 20-year-old son also named Arturo and a 17-year-old daughter, Katrina.
