In the early evening of a December day, a dispute inside a Williamsburg bodega tragically escalated, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge. The victim, 34-year-old Augustin Santiago of Bed-Stuy, was found by emergency responders with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest near the intersection of Broadway and Marcy Avenue just before 6 p.m. on December 9, 2021.
He was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, but the efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify a suspect, Christopher Jones, a 23-year-old resident of Manhattan. According to police reports, Santiago and Jones had been involved in an argument inside a nearby bodega shortly before the shooting occurred. The disagreement spilled out onto the street, where the fatal shot was fired.
Less than a month later, on January 2, 2022, an arrest was made in the case. The New York Police Department apprehended Christopher Jones and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. At the time of his arrest for the murder of Augustin Santiago, Jones was already in custody at Rikers Island on an unrelated matter.
