In the early morning hours of Father's Day, June 17, 2018, William Fernandez, a 33-year-old man, was shot and killed in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The fatal encounter occurred around 12:00 a.m. at the corner of Bushwick Avenue and Beaver Street. Fernandez was on his way to spend the day with his four children.
Emergency responders found Fernandez with a gunshot wound to the chest and transported him to a local hospital, but he could not be saved.
The incident was the culmination of a simmering dispute with a neighbor over a parking spot.
In the weeks following the shooting, police arrested 46-year-old David Hall in connection with the crime. Investigators stated that Hall confronted Fernandez, accusing him of slashing his tires, which escalated the long-standing parking dispute. Surveillance footage captured Hall pursuing Fernandez, who had his hands in the air before Hall opened fire.
David Hall was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. In December 2019, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder. In February 2020, a judge sentenced Hall to 20 years to life in prison for the murder of William Fernandez. During the sentencing, the judge noted Hall's obsession with the parking spot, which he monitored with cameras. Fernandez's sister, Jasmine, spoke at the sentencing, stating that her brother had been trying to avoid Hall on the night of the shooting.
