In the early morning hours of a Fourth of July in 1993, a celebration of love and life took a tragic turn for 27-year-old Police Officer Rudolph P. Thomas Jr. He and his girlfriend were marking the fourth anniversary of their first date, a joyous occasion that led them to a Brooklyn deli on Pennsylvania Avenue in the East New York section of the borough. As Thomas waited on his new motorcycle, two men approached him, one brandishing a firearm.
