In the spring of 2000, the disappearance of a wealthy Russian businessman from his Staten Island home unraveled a tale of betrayal and murder that captivated New York City. Borys Kiejliches, a 49-year-old male, was a jet-fuel magnate with an estimated net worth of $3 million. He lived in an upscale Todt Hill neighborhood with his wife, Elena Kiejliches, and their two young children.
The seemingly perfect life of the Russian émigré couple, however, was fractured by domestic strife and infidelity.
In late March 2000, Borys Kiejliches vanished. His wife, Elena, then 34, took their children on a trip to Disney World before reporting him missing. She initially suggested to authorities that her husband might have simply walked out on their marriage. However, the investigation took a grim turn on April 25, 2000, when Borys Kiejliches's decomposed body was discovered. His remains were found stuffed inside a cardboard barrel, floating in a marsh near the Belt Parkway on the Brooklyn-Queens border. An autopsy revealed he had been shot once in the back of the head at close range with a 9mm handgun and had also suffered a fracture to the back of his skull.
The focus of the police investigation soon shifted from potential ties to the Russian mob to Borys's home life. Detectives uncovered that Elena Kiejliches was engaged in an affair with an aspiring rapper and ex-convict named Messiah Justice, who was 26 at the time. Justice would often stay at the Kiejliches's residence while Borys was away on business. When brought in for questioning, Justice confessed to his role in the crime, implicating Elena as the mastermind and killer.
According to Messiah Justice's testimony, Elena had called him on the night of March 24, 2000, asking for his help after she had killed her husband in the basement of their home. Prosecutors argued that the motive for the murder was Borys's threat to divorce Elena and leave her with nothing after discovering her affair and arguments over money. Justice admitted to helping Elena dispose of the body. He recounted how they initially left the body in an abandoned building before he later returned, placed it in the barrel, and dumped it in the water in East New York.
Elena Kiejliches was arrested in May 2000 and charged with second-degree murder. During her trial in June 2002, her defense team attempted to portray Messiah Justice as the killer, highlighting his extensive criminal record. However, the jury was swayed by the prosecution's evidence and Justice's testimony. After deliberating for only three hours, they found Elena Kiejliches guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. She was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison. Messiah Justice pleaded guilty to evidence tampering and hindering prosecution and received a sentence of one and one-third to three years in prison. Elena Kiejliches has maintained her innocence throughout her incarceration and became eligible for parole in June 2024.
