On a fall afternoon in Bainbridge, New York, a senseless act of violence tragically cut short the life of 26-year-old Derek D. Prindle. The events of October 27, 2014, began as a road rage incident on Route 7. Prindle and his father, Derek S. Prindle, were driving when they were aggressively tailgated and then passed by another driver, John M. Guzy.
The situation escalated when Guzy abruptly stopped his vehicle in front of the Prindles, leading both parties to pull into the parking lot of a local fitness center.
What started as a verbal confrontation quickly turned deadly. Guzy, a 56-year-old retired NYPD officer and then-Chenango County Corrections Officer, produced a. 25 caliber handgun. In the ensuing moments, he shot the younger Prindle in the stomach and then fatally in the chest. The father, Derek S. Prindle, was also shot and seriously wounded as he tried to aid his son. Both Derek D. Prindle and his father were unarmed at the time of the altercation. Immediately following the shooting, Guzy drove to the nearby state police barracks in Sidney and turned himself in.
The legal proceedings that followed painted a grim picture of the events of that day. Guzy was indicted on a 17-count indictment which included charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and driving while intoxicated, as it was determined his blood alcohol content was. 11 at the time of the incident. A search of Guzy's residence uncovered a significant cache of illegal weapons, including multiple unlicensed firearms and other prohibited items. He waived his right to a jury trial, opting for a bench trial where the judge would decide his fate.
During the trial, Guzy's defense team argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming he feared for his life during the confrontation. However, this claim was ultimately rejected by the court. In June 2016, John M. Guzy was convicted and subsequently sentenced to a term of 40 years to life in prison. An appeals court later upheld this sentence, ensuring that the man responsible for the death of Derek Prindle would face the consequences of his actions. In addition to the criminal proceedings, the elder Prindle successfully sued Guzy in a personal injury lawsuit.
