On a late Saturday afternoon in Wyandanch, New York, 32-year-old Vernon Brown was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car with a friend on South 31st Street. It was February 7, 2015, and the ordinary day was about to take a tragic turn. As they sat there, a male suspect approached the vehicle on a bicycle and, without warning, fired a single shot into the car, striking Brown.
The gunman quickly fled the scene on his bicycle, disappearing into the neighborhood.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Brown's friend frantically drove him to a nearby house on Levey Boulevard, where another friend promptly called 911 around 5:55 p.m. Emergency medical services arrived and transported Brown to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
