In the early evening of a spring day in Queens, New York, a 42-year-old man named Sean Overton was near his home in the Astoria Houses. It was just after 5 p.m. on April 5, 2015, and he had been chatting with a friend moments before, inquiring about borrowing a football video game. As his friend turned to go inside, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm. There was a single shot, a brief pause, and then three or four more in quick succession.
