A quiet street in Mastic Beach, New York, became the scene of a heart-wrenching tragedy on an April afternoon in 2015. Inside their home on Woodside Drive, 27-year-old Jenni Lee Street, a female employee at Southampton Hospital, was found dead from a gunshot wound. The grim discovery was made after four of her six children arrived home from school to find themselves locked out.
The children, unable to get inside, sought help from a nearby adult who, upon peering into a window, saw a man lying on the floor and immediately called 911. When Suffolk County police officers forced their way into the residence, they found a devastating scene. Jenni Lee Street and her 28-year-old husband, Wayne Street, were both deceased. Two of their youngest children, an infant and a toddler, were found unharmed inside the house.
Investigators quickly determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. They concluded that Wayne Street had shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself. Further investigation into Wayne Street's background revealed a troubled past with the law, including a prior conviction for weapon possession for which he was on probation at the time of the incident. The couple's six children were taken to a local hospital and placed in the care of Child Protective Services. In the days following the tragedy, the house where the event unfolded was destroyed in a fire that authorities deemed noncriminal in nature.
