In the summer of 2015, the city of Rochester, New York, was shaken by a violent act that claimed the life of 17-year-old Jonah Barley. On the night of August 19th, a crowd had gathered for a basketball game at the Boys & Girls Club on Genesee Street. As the event concluded and people began to disperse, gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle, turning a scene of community gathering into one of tragedy.
Barley was one of three young men who lost their lives in the mass shooting.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of three individuals. Johnny Blackshell Jr. was identified as one of the shooters. During his trial, it was revealed that he had fired a rifle into the crowd of people. In July 2016, a jury found Blackshell guilty on three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jonah Barley, Raekwon Manigault, and Johnny Johnson. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Two other men, Jalen Everett and Michael Mathis Jr., were also charged in connection with the shooting. Their legal journeys, however, concluded differently. After an initial conviction of second-degree murder, Everett's verdict was set aside due to juror misconduct. He was later acquitted in a retrial in January 2017. Michael Mathis Jr. was also acquitted of the charges brought against him. The community was left to mourn the loss of the three young men, with the legal proceedings bringing a measure of closure for some, while the acquittals left lingering questions for others.
