In the Bronx, a dispute over drugs on a September afternoon in 2015 proved fatal for 24-year-old David Hooks. On September 20th, on a street corner at East 194th Street and Briggs Avenue in the Fordham neighborhood, an altercation led to his death. Surveillance footage from that day captured Hooks and another man chasing Kadeem Carty. In a sudden turn of events, Carty turned and fired at the two men, striking Hooks twice in the lower back. Hooks was rushed to St.
Barnabas Hospital, but the injuries were too severe, and he died shortly after arriving.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department identified 22-year-old Kadeem Carty as the suspect. An image of Carty, described as being 6-foot-3-inches tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds, was released to the public as police sought information on his whereabouts. For two years, Carty remained a fugitive, evading capture. His time on the run came to an end on November 20, 2017, when he was apprehended in Pennsylvania.
After his arrest, Kadeem Carty faced legal proceedings for the death of David Hooks. In March 2019, he pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree manslaughter. The following month, a Bronx man was sentenced for the 2015 shooting. A judge sentenced Carty to 12 years in prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. During the sentencing, the judge asked Carty if he had anything to say, to which he replied, 'no'. Hooks' mother, Lillian Perez, was present in the courtroom and expressed her disappointment with the length of the sentence, stating that she believed he should have received more than 12 years for taking her son's life.
