In the quiet neighborhood of Canarsie, Brooklyn, a dispute on a Saturday evening in February escalated into a tragedy that cut short the life of a young man. On February 13, 2016, Javane Laurent, a 24-year-old male, was fatally shot outside his mother's home on East 93rd Street. The incident, which unfolded around 5:45 p.m., stemmed from a heated argument with a man who had come to visit his ex-girlfriend, who was a tenant in the house.
The conflict began when Javane Laurent became
angered that the visitor, identified as 28-year-old Brian Williams of Brownsville, had brought a firearm into the residence. Laurent confronted Williams and, after retrieving a machete from his room, began to escort him out of the house. Once they were outside, the confrontation took a deadly turn. Williams produced a handgun and shot Laurent multiple times in the back. Emergency services were called, and Laurent was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York City Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification and apprehension of Brian Williams as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged in connection with the death of Javane Laurent. The case then moved through the legal system, culminating in a jury trial.
Following the trial, Brian Williams was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. On October 3, 2017, a Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice sentenced him to 20 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
