In the winter of 2016, a dispute over marijuana tragically escalated, leading to the death of 28-year-old Jamaal Moses in Binghamton, New York. On Valentine's Day, February 14th, an argument erupted between Moses and 19-year-old Jonathan Garcia in the vicinity of Lake Avenue and Merrill Street. During the confrontation, Garcia fatally shot Moses. While investigators later revealed that Moses was in possession of a pellet gun at the time, it was Garcia who used a lethal weapon, ending Moses's
life.
Immediately following the shooting, Garcia, a resident of Binghamton, fled the state in an attempt to evade law enforcement. A search for him was quickly launched, with authorities focusing their efforts on the Miami, Florida area, where Garcia had family. The manhunt proved successful when U.S. Marshals and the Miami-Dade Police apprehended him as he was exiting a highway.
Following his capture, Garcia was extradited back to Broome County, New York, to face legal proceedings. He was initially charged with second-degree murder for the death of Jamaal Moses. However, the case did not proceed to a full trial. Instead, Garcia accepted a plea agreement. In June of that year, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. While he admitted to intending to cause harm to Moses, he maintained that he did not intend to kill him.
In September 2016, Jonathan Garcia, then 20 years old, was sentenced for his role in the death of Jamaal Moses. A Broome County Court judge sentenced him to 15 years in state prison. During the sentencing, the judge urged Garcia to use his time behind bars to reflect on his actions and find a way to turn his life around. The resolution of the case brought a close to the legal chapter of a senseless act of violence that cut a young man's life short.
