In the early morning hours of Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, 2020, Steven Jamell, a 42-year-old White male, was fatally shot in the backyard of his home on the 3700 block of Rockville Road in Indianapolis. Investigators believe the motive for the killing was robbery, suspecting that someone had followed Jamell from a bank on Washington Street. It is thought that an altercation occurred when the assailants attempted to rob him.
Surveillance footage from a neighbor's camera captured a car
that had followed Jamell to his residence. Witnesses reported seeing three men fleeing the scene, with at least one of them firing a weapon as they escaped. Despite the release of photos of the vehicle connected to the homicide by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the case remains unsolved.
Jamell was a mechanic at Martin's Automotive and was described by his girlfriend as a good man who prioritized his son. At the time of his death, he left behind his 16-year-old son. His family and friends have established a reward fund for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death. Crime Stoppers has also offered a reward for tips, which can be provided anonymously. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the murder.
