In the Soundview section of the Bronx, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm on March 17, 2016, claiming the life of 21-year-old Darryl Samuels. The young man was standing in front of his home at the James Monroe Houses, a place familiar to him, when he was struck by multiple bullets to his chest. The brazen attack occurred around 3 p.m., a time when children were returning from school and the neighborhood was alive with activity.
The location was starkly close to the 43rd Precinct, yet this proximity to law enforcement offered no deterrence to the violence that unfolded.
Emergency responders arrived to a chaotic scene, immediately administering CPR in a desperate attempt to save Samuels' life. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, but the severity of his injuries proved fatal. Investigators at the scene recovered at least five bullet casings and a. 380-caliber handgun, though it was not immediately clear to whom the weapon belonged. The area, part of a New York City Housing Authority complex, unfortunately lacked security cameras that might have captured the incident and aided in the investigation.
In the wake of the shooting, police confirmed that the assailant had fled the scene and remained at large. No arrests have been announced in connection with the murder of Darryl Samuels. Reports indicated that Samuels had previous encounters with law enforcement, including 11 prior arrests, and had survived a previous shooting. Despite the public nature of the fatal shooting, the individual or individuals responsible for his death have not been publicly identified or apprehended, leaving a case that remains unresolved.
