In the early morning hours of January 22, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in the South Bronx that cut short the life of 33-year-old Shamel Amos. A resident of Richmond Plaza, Amos was gunned down near a warehouse at 805 East 139th St. in what authorities have described as a drive-by shooting. The male victim was found by officers from the 40th Precinct who were responding to a 911 call about the shooting at approximately 6 a.m. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and legs.
Emergency medical services rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the death of Shamel Amos, a husband and father, led police to identify suspects who had allegedly opened fire from a vehicle. According to police, two males exited the warehouse and got into a dark-colored Honda CRV. They then pulled up alongside Amos, and a passenger fired a handgun multiple times, striking him. The vehicle, which had Florida license plates and distinctive stickers on the trunk, fled the scene.
In connection with the fatal shooting, the New York Police Department arrested a suspect. Daniel Colon, a 23-year-old resident of the Bronx, was taken into custody and charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Despite this arrest, the investigation remains ongoing as a second shooter is believed to have been involved and is still at large. Authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information regarding the second suspect.
