On the morning of November 5, 2020, a tragic event unfolded in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx. Angel Barreiro, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, was discovered in the driver's seat of his black Acura, parked opposite 1365 Cromwell Avenue. He was found unconscious and unresponsive, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and swiftly transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals / Bronx Care.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The investigation into the death of Angel Barreiro quickly pointed to a violent gang rivalry. The New York City Police Department identified Andrew Done, 21, as a suspect in the homicide. It was revealed that Done was the leader of a criminal organization known as the “Shooting Boys.” This gang, founded by Done in 2017 after he broke away from the Trinitarios gang, was involved in selling narcotics and a series of violent acts throughout the Bronx. The murder of Barreiro was the culmination of the escalating conflict between the Shooting Boys and the Trinitarios. Shortly after the killing, Done fled to the Dominican Republic to evade capture.
In March 2022, a significant breakthrough occurred in the case when federal authorities unsealed a fifteen-count indictment against ten members of the Shooting Boys gang, including Andrew Done. The charges were extensive, covering racketeering conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, firearms offenses, and narcotics conspiracy. Done was specifically charged with the murder of Angel Barreiro. In a coordinated law enforcement operation, eight members of the gang were arrested. Done, however, remained at large until April 2022, when he was apprehended in the Dominican Republic by the United States Marshals Service.
Following his capture and extradition, Andrew Done faced the justice system for his crimes. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the murder of Angel Barreiro and other racketeering offenses. On February 22, 2023, the leader of the Shooting Boys gang was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in the murder and the wave of violence his gang had unleashed upon the community. As part of his sentence, Done will also have five years of supervised release. Other members of the gang also faced charges and sentencing for their various roles in the criminal enterprise.
