In the winter of 2021, a sixteen-year-old male named Kahlik Grier was tragically killed in a shooting inside his Bronx apartment building. On the night of January 11th, Grier was returning to his family's apartment after visiting a friend on another floor. At the same time, a dispute on the ninth floor escalated into gunfire, with a gunman shooting and wounding two men. As the shooter fled down the stairwell, he encountered Grier on the eighth floor and fatally shot him.
Authorities believe Grier was an innocent bystander, tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was later pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.
The investigation into the senseless violence that claimed Kahlik Grier’s life led to a series of arrests. Police apprehended nineteen-year-old Desire Louree, a known gang member who had recently been released from jail, and charged him with murder for allegedly orchestrating the initial ambush on the ninth floor. Although Louree was not believed to be in the building during the shooting, he was accused of planning the attack. Additionally, authorities arrested a fifteen-year-old boy, whose name was not released, on charges of murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a firearm.
Further investigation brought more individuals into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Among them was nineteen-year-old Orlando Benn of Brooklyn. In a turn of events that added another layer of tragedy to the story, Kahlik Grier’s own brother, twenty-one-year-old Deshaun Grier, was also arrested at the scene and charged with criminal possession of a weapon. However, detectives did not believe he was connected to the shooting itself. The motive for the initial shooting that ultimately led to Kahlik Grier's death was not immediately made clear by investigators.
