Joel Jay-Gunz Baba, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on July 5, 2020, in the hallway of an apartment building in the Bronx, New York. The incident, which occurred around 8:00 p.m. at 306 East 171st Street, also resulted in the death of 23-year-old Eghosa Imafidon and the wounding of 29-year-old Mohammed Baba. The shooting was believed to be in retaliation for the killing of another man hours earlier.
The attack was captured on surveillance video, showing two gunmen opening fire on
the three men as they were crouched outside an apartment door. Joel Baba, an aspiring rapper of Ghanaian descent known as Jay Gunz, was struck multiple times in the torso, arm, and leg. He and Imafidon, who sustained gunshot wounds to the neck, head, and arm, were pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Investigators pursued leads suggesting the shooting was a revenge act for the drive-by shooting death of Anthony Robinson, which had occurred just a few blocks away earlier the same day. This led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Kalvin Robinson, the brother of Anthony Robinson, and his co-defendant, Nasir Greene, were subsequently charged in connection with the killings.
In November 2023, both Kalvin Robinson and Nasir Greene pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. In January 2024, Robinson was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Greene received a sentence of 20 years in prison in April 2024. The prosecution highlighted that this act of retaliatory justice only served to continue a cycle of violence.
