In the Bronx, a 22-year-old man named Miguel Vargas was fatally shot on the evening of Monday, February 13, 2023. The incident occurred at approximately 6:57 p.m. inside a building located at 689 East 187th Street in the Belmont neighborhood. Emergency services were dispatched to the location following a 911 call about the shooting. Upon arrival, police officers discovered Vargas with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest. He was rushed to St.
Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
According to the police investigation, the shooting was carried out by two individuals who arrived at the scene on a motorized scooter. The passenger on the scooter reportedly fired several shots, striking Vargas multiple times, before getting back on the scooter and fleeing the scene with the driver. The suspects were last seen heading southbound on Beaumont Avenue.
An arrest was made in connection with the murder on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The New York Police Department took 26-year-old Yorvin Gomez into custody. Gomez, a resident of the Morris Heights section of the Bronx, was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities also noted that Gomez was facing charges in a separate fatal shooting that occurred in December 2022. The investigation into Miguel Vargas's death remains ongoing as police continue to seek information regarding the second individual involved in the shooting.
