In the bustling 167th Street subway station in the Bronx, on the evening of October 4, 2019, a tragic and violent encounter unfolded that would end the life of 25-year-old James Cubille. He was at the station to meet his ex-girlfriend and pick up their five-year-old son. The routine exchange, however, took a fatal turn with the arrival of another man, Rafael Hollis, who was in a relationship with Cubille's ex-girlfriend.
An argument broke out between the two men, escalating quickly and violently in the busy public space.
The verbal dispute culminated in a heart-stopping moment of violence when Hollis, then 29 years old, pulled out a gun and shot Cubille in the torso. The act was brazen, carried out in front of numerous commuters, Cubille's own young son, and the child's mother. In the immediate aftermath, Hollis fled the scene, leaving chaos and tragedy in his wake. Emergency services were called, and Cubille was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Two days after the incident, Rafael Hollis turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in November 2019, a grand jury indicted Hollis on these charges.
Ultimately, Hollis did not face a full trial. On December 9, 2021, he pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree manslaughter. In January 2022, a judge sentenced him to 17 years in prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. The tragic event in the subway station not only resulted in the loss of a young man's life but also left a child to witness the violent death of his father, a trauma that would have lasting repercussions.
