In the spring of 2016, a domestic dispute in Staten Island escalated into a fatal encounter, ending the life of 21-year-old Shamel Matthews. On the evening of April 14th, Matthews, a Black male, was at the West Brighton apartment of his girlfriend when an argument erupted. The conflict was not with his partner, but with Tyrell Brown, the 21-year-old boyfriend of his girlfriend's daughter. The verbal altercation quickly turned violent.
