In June of 2016, a 49-year-old white male named Dariusz Maslosz was reported missing from his home in Patterson, New York. A family member had last seen him on the morning of June 1st at his residence on Caroline Drive. When he failed to return home or make contact by that evening, his family grew concerned and alerted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. They informed deputies that he might be depressed and expressed worries for his well-being. It was also believed that he had taken a licensed handgun with him.

Relatives described Maslosz as an avid fisherman and hunter who frequented several local areas for these activities, including the Cranberry Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Acting on this information, a deputy sheriff checking the area discovered Maslosz's motorcycle parked unattended near a hiking trail leading into the preserve. A search of the 1,085-acre state forest was initiated.

The following afternoon, on June 2, 2016, Dariusz Maslosz was found deceased within the Cranberry Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Investigators preliminarily determined that he had died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy was pending to make a formal ruling on the cause of death, but authorities stated it was an apparent suicide.
