In the early morning hours of a summer Saturday in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a 26-year-old man named Charles Byrd was on his way to pick up his young daughter. It was approximately 1:20 a.m. on July 30, 2016, when violence shattered the relative quiet outside the Brevoort Houses on Bainbridge Street.
