In the early morning hours of a summer Saturday in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a 26-year-old man named Charles Byrd was on his way to pick up his young daughter. It was approximately 1:20 a.m. on July 30, 2016, when violence shattered the relative quiet outside the Brevoort Houses on Bainbridge Street. An unknown assailant approached Byrd and shot him multiple times in the torso.
First responders rushed to the scene, finding Byrd critically injured.
He was quickly transported to Interfaith Medical Center, but the medical staff's efforts were in vain. Charles Byrd, a man described by the mother of his child as a 'tall, gentle giant' who was always willing to help others, was pronounced dead.
