In the small town of Elma, New York, a friendly gathering turned into a devastating tragedy on November 6, 2016, ending the life of 19-year-old Anthony C. King. The young man was at a friend's house on Dorris Drive when he suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The incident was not the result of a heated conflict, but rather a reckless act that would forever alter the course of two families' lives.
That evening, King was visiting his friend, Jake Klocek, who was 20 years old at the time and house-sitting. Klocek reportedly took out a handgun from a drawer, and in a moment of carelessness, the firearm discharged. The single bullet struck King in the stomach. Despite being rushed to Erie County Medical Center, his injuries proved to be fatal. The community, including students and staff at Iroquois Central School District where both young men had graduated, was left in shock and mourning.
In the wake of the shooting, Jake Klocek was arrested and faced serious legal consequences for his actions. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors argued that while there was no evidence to suggest Klocek intended to harm his friend, his handling of the loaded firearm was reckless and warranted the felony charges. In July 2017, Jake Klocek pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. During his sentencing in October of that year, he expressed deep remorse and apologized to Anthony King's family for the immense pain he had caused. The judge sentenced Klocek to a prison term of 4 to 12 years. King's parents had requested the maximum sentence, grappling with the profound loss of their son.
