Irving Ashkenas, a 34-year-old self-employed taxi driver, was found dead on September 1, 1936, near the Paramount Manor Hotel in Loch Sheldrake, New York. His body was discovered by a milkman named Dave Margolin, who noticed a dark-colored Lincoln sedan with its driver's door open and Ashkenas lying face up in a pool of blood.
