In the summer of 2014, a young man's life was tragically cut short on the streets of Manhattan. Daryl Washington, a 27-year-old male, was killed on July 29th in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood. His death stemmed from a dispute over his relationship with a woman, which ultimately led to a fatal confrontation.
The altercation occurred late in the evening, near Washington's home on West 144th Street.
An argument erupted between Washington and Wayne Harris, a 23-year-old member of the Bloods street gang, concerning Washington's relationship with Harris's sister. The verbal dispute quickly escalated to physical violence. Harris, accompanied by four other men, allegedly attacked Washington.
During the assault, Harris is said to have briefly left the scene to retrieve a firearm. Upon his return, he reportedly pistol-whipped Washington before shooting him in the face. The attack proved fatal for Washington. The four other individuals who participated in the initial assault were identified as Thaddaeus Burkett, 20, Travis Robinson, 23, John Arias, 23, and Dayvon Pinkney, 22.
Following an investigation, all five men were apprehended. Wayne Harris was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, two gun charges, and gang assault. Authorities reported that Harris confessed to the crime both verbally and in writing, although his lawyer later contested the confession, claiming it was coerced. The other four men, Burkett, Robinson, Arias, and Pinkney, were all charged with gang assault for their roles in the beating of Washington.
