In the early hours of a snowy February morning in 1972, the vibrant life of Edward Lee Morgan, a gifted 33-year-old male jazz trumpeter, was tragically cut short. The setting was Slugs' Saloon, a jazz club nestled in Manhattan's East Village, where Morgan's band had been performing. Between sets, a heated altercation erupted between Morgan and his live-in girlfriend, Helen Moore.
The argument culminated in Moore shooting Morgan.
While the gunshot wound was not immediately fatal, the heavy snowfall that blanketed the city severely hampered the arrival of the ambulance. This critical delay proved to be devastating, as Morgan bled to death before medical help could reach him.
Helen Moore was promptly arrested for the shooting. She subsequently spent a brief period in prison for the act. Following her incarceration, Moore was released on parole. She relocated to her home state of North Carolina, where she passed away from a heart condition in March of 1996. The complex and ultimately tragic relationship between Morgan and Moore, and the events leading to his untimely death, were later chronicled in a documentary titled 'I Called Him Morgan.'
