On a Sunday morning in May, Daniel Enriquez, a 48-year-old man of Mexican American descent, was riding a northbound Q train, making his way to brunch in Manhattan. It was a journey he had been hesitant to make by subway since the pandemic began, but on this particular day, May 22, 2022, he chose the train to avoid surge pricing on a ride-sharing app. As the train crossed the Manhattan Bridge, his life was abruptly and senselessly cut short.
