In a sixth-floor hallway of a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building on a winter evening, a violent dispute tragically cut short the life of 29-year-old Maurice Lindsey. On January 30, 2017, Lindsey stepped in to defend his girlfriend who was involved in a fight at 1625 Fulton Street, near Lewis Avenue. During this intervention, a teenager allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Lindsey in the chest.
As Lindsey slumped against the wall, clutching his chest, the gunman fired twice more,
striking him in the back and shoulder. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Lindsey was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The male victim's attempt to protect his loved one ultimately cost him his own life.
Following the deadly encounter, the New York Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Eighteen-year-old Taariq King was identified as the individual who allegedly shot Maurice Lindsey. On February 15, 2017, King was taken into custody by police. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon for his role in the fatal shooting.
